Nate's Programming Blog

Well I started a new project working on a team developing an Enterprise Architecture and it is a whole new experience for me. I’ve been doing a lot of research in Service Oriented Architecture lately and the company I’m working for is wanting to incorporate SOA into their new Enterprise Architecture approach, so I came on board as the SOA “expert”.

I’ve been working on the project for about a month and so far I haven’t done anything close to SOA. We have been developing a series of conceptual reference models…wait…actually we have been developing a series of briefs that explain what is going to be in our conceptual reference models, so I’ve been living in power point for the past couple of weeks.

As an engineer, it is an interesting twist on my outlook on life. It is very difficult at times for an engineer to think about things from a business perspective. It is easy to say, “in order to have a SOA you need a, b and c”, without even knowing what the business is. It is a little more difficult when you have to apply it to an existing non-SOA organization with politics and all. You have to choose your words carefully and pretty much market it to the executives. A colleague used the term marketecture and I think that is the perfect term to describe it.

Nate, I believe a lot of techies eventually find themselves in your position at some point or other. You should follow up this post with some pointers that you have learned through this experience.
